Portland Society of Natural History collection, 1845-1938.

Documents relating to the Portland Society of Natural History. Most of those are undated papers and reports on aspects of Maine natural history, including geologic and geographic features and local flora and fauna. Also included are documents relating to the acquisition and 1854 loss of the Society's shell collection, reports, and correspondence on noted conchologist and society member J. W. Mighels, one man's hunting records from the period between 1869 and 1916, and most of an untitled ms. on early Maine.

The Portland Society of Natural History was incorporated in 1850, succeeding the earlier Maine Institute of Natural Science. During its active period, members included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Commodore Robert E. Peary. The collection of the Society was originally amassed through the donation or purchase of private collections and rivaled any others on the East Coast.
